Fattoria San Lorenzo
Fattoria San Lorenzo is a family operation dedicated to the production of organic and biodynamic wines in the farm that Natalino Crognaletti inherited from his father Gino, whom in his turn had inherited it from his father Enrico. Enrico was also a master cooper, and Gino spent his life selecting old clones of Verdicchio from ancient vineyards called alberate. The precious legacy that those patriarchs have passed on to Natalino is incorporated in the management of the vineyards and in the cellar operations, and is attested, for instance, in the peculiar grapes of Verdicchio, extraordinarily rich in minerals, from which “Vigna delle Oche” Riserva is produced.
All the vineyards are organically and biodynamically farmed.
I met Natalino's laugh before I met the person or the wines... at the biodynamic wine festival, Merano, in northern Italy in the fall of 2008 (the same fair where I met Nicoletta Bocca for the first time). Fabrizio Iuli introduced me to his long time friend, the man behind this magnetic laugh I heard from across the room; Signore Crognaletti! Natalino didn't waste any time, with a huge smile and friendly hand shake, he immediately poured me a 1997 Verdicchio aged in cement. WHAT? You heard right... it was love at first sip, and I hadn't even tasted the other four Verdicchio's he produced yet (if you happen to run into Natalino at a wine fair, make sure to set aside a good hour, he has a lot of labels, and a lot to say :)! I finally convinced the 'dynamic' biodynamic producer to come on board with Indie in 2010.
Natalino, together with his mother, Vera Biondini, manages the vineyards which are situated in Montecarotto where Natalino was born and raised, and in the nearby communes Ostra, Ostra Venere e Corinaldo. Natalino lives on the estate with his wife, son, mother and the numerous farm animals for which he names his wines!
Philosophies, Ideas & Practices
All the vineyards are organically and biodynamically farmed, and all the agricoltural operations are made by human hand in order to preserve the plants, the soil, and the environment. Natalino is also in charge of the soil management and of the wine-making operations.
With a production now diversified into 12 different wines (5 whites and 7 reds), Fattoria San Lorenzo while run and executed completely by Natalino, has recently started a collaboration with oenologist and producer Hartman Donà.
From Ancona in Italy’s Marche, come these remarkable wines. Natalino Crognaletti (above) runs this long-established family business and looks after some 35 hectares of vines, both owned and rented, in the communes of Montecarotto, Ostra, Ostra Vetere and Corinaldo. Vineyards are worked biodynamically and organically, and winemaking is minimal intervention with lots of time on yeast lees for the whites.
