Rosso del Contadino is Frank’s interpretation of farmer’s fuel, a drinkable wine, young, humble, healthy and authentic. A wine that drinks like water, but expresses its origins, the unique terroir of the Etna volcano.
The soil composition is lavic, volcanic, pure basalt rock. The subsoil is pure basalt. The exposition is north, north-east.
Rosso del Contadino is a blend of so many different grape varieties, with the majority being Nerello Mascalese. The other varieties are Nerello Capuccio, Sangiovese, Alicante Bouschet, Minella Nera, Uva Francisa, Grenache. A small percentage of white grapes such as Inzolia and Minella Bianca are also added.
The grand cru vineyards are Contrada Verzella, Contrada Pontale Palino, Contrada Porcaria, Contrada Tartaraci, Contrada Monte Colla, Contrada Barbabecchi, Contrada Marchesa and Contrada Charanchello. It is impossible to give an exact figure as the the vineyard extension that goes into making this wine, since the declassified grapes for Magma Rosso and Rosso del Mongibello end up in this Cuvée. In general, the grapes destined for use in this wine are in part also destined for Magma or Mongibello (for the latter wines only the best esposition areas are used). The yield per plant is approximately 600gr. The youngest plants have recently been planted (about 300 new plants in 2006) and the oldest are over 100 years. The average age, if such a calculation is possible, is approximately 50 years.
Mechanical crushing. Fermentation with the whole grape (without stems) in 500-1,000l enological plastic tubs. Pressing after the malolactic fermentation around February. Decantation in 1,500-2,220l high density polyethylene vats for the time it takes to clarify the wine. Bottling during the appropriate moon phase between May and July without clarification or filtration.
The wine has a total sulphite level of 15mg/l which the wine develops naturally. The level depends on the vintage. No products are added.
Depending on the vintage the production is between 4,000 and 9,000 bottles per year.
